In 1905, the founder of Rotary International, Paul
Harris, a lawyer from Iowa, gathered a small group of friends at 127 N.
Dearborn Street in Chicago, Illinois, to discuss the idea of a club for
business men and professionals.
This first meeting identified three purposes for the
organization: promotion of business interests, promotion of good
fellowship and the advancement of the best interests of the community.
Later, “the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and
peace” was added to what is now known as the Object of Rotary
along with the key phrase, “ideal of service”.
