Paul Harris

In 1905, the founder of Rotary International, Paul Harris, a lawyer from Iowa, gathered a small group of friends at 127 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago, Illinois, to discuss the idea of a club for business men and professionals.

This first meeting identified three purposes for the organization: promotion of business interests, promotion of good fellowship and the advancement of the best interests of the community. Later, “the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace” was added to what is now known as the Object of Rotary along with the key phrase, “ideal of service”.

Today, Rotary International is comprised of over 32,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide.

The Award

In his honor, contributors of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation are recognized as Paul Harris Fellows and receive a medal and certificate noting their accomplishment.

Rotarians who donate $1000 annually to the Rotary Foundation are considered Paul Harris Society members.

The Piedmont Rotary Club proudly claims 16 members (44%) who have received Paul Harris Awards and, two are members of the Paul Harris Society.
